Event Report

The ongoing Capt. Harry Subramaniam KS 2021 of the ICS Middle East Branch covers many topics of importance to day to day shipping practice such as Essential Concepts in Shipping, Delivery orders, Freight Forwarding, Insurance & Claims, etc.


The session on ‘An Overview of Tanker Chartering” was held on 27th October 2021 by Capt. Jagan Satyamurty – General Manager of Aurora Tankers Dubai covered various aspects of Tanker Chartering such as ships and cargoes, the process of tanker chartering, the stakeholders in chartering of ships, different types of charters, the peculiarities of tanker chartering and the importance of tank cleaning. The thorough knowledge and extensive experience of Capt. Jagan was evident throughout the presentation. The event was anchored by Mr. Sudesh Chaturvedi Committee Member of the Middle Branch of the ICS and concluded with Question and Answer session

Event Report

The Seventh session of the ongoing Capt Harry Subramaniam Memorial Knowledge Series 2021 titled " Freight Forwarding - Adding value to the supply chain " was held on 20 October 2021

Mr. Sudesh Chaturvedi , Manager- Projects and Energy of GAC Dubai made a presentation highlighting the scope and development of freight forwarding, the key concepts in multimodal logistics and supply chain and the main documents used in freight forwarding. He also explained the value-added services given by the freight forwarders: packing, loading, lashing, survey, insurance and IOR/EOR. The presentation also dealt with digitization, e-commerce, Hyperloop and drones and other new developments in the offing. The presentation was followed by a Question and Answer session Mr. Dinesh Lobo, committee member of the ICS Middle East branch anchored the session

Event Report

The Middle East branch of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers hosted a very well-received webinar on "Chartering Practice - Dry Bulk Cargo” held on 18th October 2021. It is part of the ongoing Capt Harry Subramaniam Memorial Knowledge Series 2021 which is a collection of very useful lectures on essential topics for practising shipping professionals. The webinar dealt with the main subjects of dry cargo chartering, types of charter, chartering practices in the dry bulk trades, negotiations and the main terms in fixtures and Charter Parties. Mr. Binu K Joseph, Managing Director at Insight Maritime DMCC and a tutor of the ICS Middle East branch made a very interesting and easy to understand presentation that helped viewers gain a better understanding of the subject.


Mr. Krishna Prasad, President of ICS Middle east Branch moderated the webinar and Mr. Binu handled the Q&A session along with inputs from Mr. Krishna Prasad,. Over 50 participants from the GCC countries attended the event.

The Bill of Lading & Its importance in Shipping
The Knowledge Series session on “Bill of Lading and its Indispensable Value to Trade” was a popular event with nearly 65 participants.

Mr. Krishna Prasad- President of the Middle East Branch showed the importance of BL in international trade. He also explained the various functions of BL, types of BL and other critical aspects faced by industry practitioners.
Mr. Sudesh Chaturvedi - a committee member of the Middle East Branch introduced the speaker and coordinated the Question and Answer session.

The session took off with about 70 attendees, Delivery Order has a very critical function. Port agents and ship owners are exposed to claims for wrongful issuance of Delivery Order. Adequate knowledge about Bill of Lading and Delivery Order is very essential in commercial shipping.

Event Report

The webinar on ‘Insurance & Claims – Taking the Right Action at the Right Time’ organized by the ICS Middle East branch was held on 29th September 2021.

Mr. Abdul Hafis, Director of Freight Disputes & Legal Solutions and member of the ICS Middle East branch committee who has over 25 years of experience in insurance, claims and related fields explained the importance of insurance, the role of P&I Club in the settlement of cargo claims and processing of cargo claims. With the spread of multimodal transport, risk analysis of the various entities involved has become a critical factor. The presentation highlighted this point and stressed the need for suitable risk-mitigating mechanisms for the various entities involved. Relevant applicable laws were also discussed.

The ICS Middle East Branch, on 25th Sept 2021, held a webinar online on the subject “Risk Mitigating Actions for Charterers, NVOCC Operators and Traders”

The speaker for the webinar was Capt Zarir Irani ( Hon FIIMS, FICS, FNI, Master Mariner) in discussion with Capt Joh Noble ( Master Marine and BSC Nautical Studies).
Apart from his seagoing experience, Capt Zarir comes with experience as an independent surveyor with expertise in Hull and Structural damage surveys, Collision surveys, General Average surveys and a host of other types of survey work. Capt John Noble has over 40 years of experience in the marine industry having worked at Thomas Miller(UK Club) Murray Fenton and Associated Ltd, CEO of the Salvage Association for 5yrs and has attended over 60 major casualties dealing with Salvage, Wreck Removal and Oil Pollution.


The webinar was attended by nearly 200 registrants from various countries in the Middle East, South East Asia, Australia and NZ and come countries in the Med.


The webinar reiterated the commitment of ICS to continuously work to raise standards of professionalism in the industry. The event was hosted and moderated by Mr. Dinesh Lobo (FICS), committee member and education team lead of the ICS Middle East branch.

Event Report

Capt. Harry Subramaniam Memorial Knowledge series 2021 on Wednesday, September 22nd 2021 was the second session from the series.

This was titled “Trade Finance, Shipping & Logistics - Why they are inseparable” and was delivered by Mr Krishnan Subramaniam (FICS) - Logistics Manager at Petrochem Middle East FZE.
The session was well attended by over 60 participants spread over the Middle east region.

The purpose of the Knowledge Series 2021 is to give the opportunity to junior and middle-level professionals of the industry to widen their awareness and knowledge in diverse aspects of Shipping as well as to continuously strive towards raising industry standards. The Knowledge Series also serves as a very useful source of information for students doing the exams in November 2021 as well as other professionals contemplating to join the educational programmes of the ICS

Event Report

The Middle East branch commenced its online-based Knowledge Series in the name of Capt. Harry Subramaniam Memorial Knowledge series 2021 on Wednesday, September 15th 2021. The series comprises 8 sessions and runs every Wednesday until October 27th. It covers various topics that are of specific interest and relevance to young professionals in the maritime industry of the Middle East region.

The first session was titled “Essentials Concepts of Shipping” and was delivered by Mr Ravishankar(FICS) -Director of Eastgate Shipping LLC and Ms Shalini Muralidharan (FICS) – Commercial Manager Al-Rashed United Shipping.
The session was well attended by over 85 participants spread over the Middle east region.

The purpose of the Knowledge Series 2021 is to give an opportunity to junior and middle-level professionals of the industry to widen their awareness and knowledge in diverse aspects of Shipping as well as to continuously strive towards raising industry standards. ICS Virtual Open Day - 12th Sept 2021

Event Report

The ICS Middle East Branch organized a virtual Open Day on 12th September 2021, which had a registration of 110 interested candidates from the GCC region.

During the session, questions related to the Course, Fee structure & Lectures and key dates and deadlines were discussed.


The event was anchored by Mr Dinesh Lobo, Team Lead Education of the Branch who explained the ICS educational programs and guidelines to the participants on the syllabus, Examinations, and registration process. Mr. Krishna Prasad, President & Mr. Sudesh Chaturvedi, Events lead and committee member also answered a few questions for the participants and highlighted the importance of professionalism and education in building a successful career. The audience was also informed that the branch has collaborated with other ICS Branches for various online lectures where our students can get more help and guidance in preparing for exams

The ICS Middle East Branch, on 14th August 2021, held the first of a series of webinars being presented in association with the TT Club on subjects of relevance to the maritime industry. With the recent incidents involving ships carrying dangerous cargo, the processes for carrying dangerous cargo has gained more importance. The movement of hazardous cargoes, be it chemicals, petroleum products or other industrial raw materials is essential for our modern-day life. Water transport is perhaps the safest mode to carry hazardous cargoes. The safety of the supply chain for hazardous cargoes is directly linked to the knowledge and skills of each and everyone involved. The webinar titled “Legal aspects surrounding the Carriage of Dangerous Goods” covered some of the critical aspects of hazardous cargo movement. From documentation to the role and responsibilities of various parties, Mr Abdul Fahl, Director TTMS Gulf Dubai, covered the topic of hazardous cargo movement and its legal implications very well.


Attended by nearly 150 participants from around 25 countries. The event was hosted and moderated by Mr Dinesh Lobo (FICS), committee member and education team lead of the ICS Middle East branch.

ICS Virtual Open Day - 07th July 2021

Event Report

The ICS Middle East Branch organized a virtual Open Day on 7th July 2021, which had a registration of 99 interested candidates from the GCC region.

During the session, questions related to the Course, Fee structure & Lectures and key dates and Deadlines were discussed.


The event was anchored by Mr Ravi Shankar, General Secretary of the Branch who explained the ICS educational programs and guidelines to the participants on the syllabus, Examinations, and registration process. We also had Mr Mohamed Sadique, our newly elected Member and Outstanding performer of the academic year 2020/21 sharing his experiences in preparing for the ICS examinations and also gave some tips on how to choose the subjects. Mr Krishna Prasad, President & Mr Sudesh Chaturvedi, Events Team Lead of the ME Branch also answered few questions for the Participants and highlighted the importance of professionalism and education in building a successful career also emphasized the fact that we have collaborated with other ICS Branches now for Lecture series where our students can get more help and guidance in studying.

Decarbonization in the Maritime Industry - A Shared Responsibility - 10th July 2021

The ICS Middle East webinar was held on 10th July on “Decarbonization in the Maritime Industry - A Shared Responsibility” in association with Wartsila Voyage Ltd. 


Capt Norman Lopez - Master Mariner , Solicitor and Arbitrator with over 50 years of maritime experience, joined from Australia and opened with his presentation on various conventions of the IMO related to control of emissions of ships at sea and the approaching deadlines.


Capt Sandeep Mehta  - President of Adani Ports and SEZ joined from India and presented his views on how ports, in general, can play an important part in interfacing with ships at sea, shipowners and ship operators in order to optimize the use of fuel at sea.


Capt Bhupesh Gandhi - Simulation Expert at Wartsila Voyage joined in from Singapore and explained how Wartsila, a leader in Lifecycle solutions in the Power and Energy markets is working closely with ship owners, charters, port authorities and other stakeholders in the industry offering technology platforms.


The Q& A session was moderated by Mr Bruce Mills - Biz Dev Director and subject matter expert from Wartsila Voyage Ltd Portsmouth UK.

The ICS Middle East branch Dubai UAE is pleased to inform you that it organized a webinar on March 27th 2021 - 11 am Dubai Time on the topic “Container Market and Outlook”


We are thankful to Ms Monica Temporario-Trade Manager Middle East Gulf for CMA-CGM who is based in Dubai. She made a detailed presentation on the container market, the current times and the outlook for the future.


The webinar was attended by over 250 viewers in over 35 countries. Mr Krishna Prasad -President of the Middle East branch committee moderated the webinar and Mr Dinesh Lobo - Education lead at the branch hosted and conducted the event.

ICS-ME Virtual Open Day - 27th February 2021

Event Report

The ICS Middle East Branch conducted the Virtual Open Day on Feb 27th 2021.

The event was attended by more than 15 potential students from various fields of activity in the region.

The open day focused on the opportunities available to professionals in the maritime and freight forwarding industry to widen their knowledge through the Diplomas and Professional Qualifying Exams of the ICS. The Branch President, Mr Krishna Prasad, delivered a presentation explaining the types of courses and diplomas available, procedures, information related to the upcoming exams in May 2021 and other very useful guidance to assist listeners to decide on their way forward in enhancing their career path.

Mr Dinesh Lobo - Education Lead of the branch moderated the online event and also offered guidance on the nature of studies towards exams. The support to the students from local ICS Tutors through the academic sessions is indeed an added benefit.
